چکیده

What Greek can tell us about the remaking of verb endings • i could not have not written this piece, since i could not imagine not honoring the memory of Tassos Christidis, my first and best Greek friend and a giant on the contemporary Greek linguistic scene for some three decades. at the same time, though, i am deeply saddened, as i write this, knowing that it is one paper of mine on Greek that Tassos will not be reading. Yet through this small contribution, i hope to do homage to his formidable intellect and his broad interests. even though my topic is not one that Tassos himself ever worked on directly, i am confident that it is one that he would have found interesting, given the breadth of his knowledge of the Greek language (his conception of the magnum opus, Christidis 2001, is testimony to that knowledge). it is thus the least that i can do by way of recognizing Tassos and publicly remembering him.

The Discursive Construction of Ethnic Identities: The Case of Greek-Cypriot Students

This study examines how Greek-Cypriot students aged 12 to 18, an understudied group of students, construct their ethnic identity in a complex setting such as Cyprus and what motivates the students in the selection of ethnic identity labels. The choice to focus on students aged 12-18 was made on the hypothesis that young children, who did not experience the 1974 war in Cyprus, may have a differe...

Gastro-enteritis of infancy.

Professor of Greek tells me that he truly believes the classics have made him what he is. This is a very grave statement, if well founded. Indeed, I have heard the same argument from a great many Latin and Greek scholars. They all claim, with some heat, that Latin and Greek have practically made them what they are. This damaging charge against the classics should not be too readily accepted. In...

What Does the Greek First Class Conditional Imply? Gricean Methodology and the Testimony of the Ancient Greek Grammarians

Debate has been engaged for more than a century over what implications, if any, a Greek First Class Conditional (FCC) has concerning the proposition in its protasis. Some pedagogical grammars claim that the Greek FCC is well translated with the English causative construction introduced with "since." In this paper a twofold approach is used to show that this claim is in error. First, a methodolo...

The aim of this application is to facilitate the efforts of Ancient ...

Focus in Greek wh-questions

We present an analysis of multiple focus sentences in Greek. On an empirical level, we show that the current generalisation in the Greek literature that multiple focus is unavailable in Greek is too strong as it stands. What is unavailable is multiple maximal foci in sentences where one focused item has moved to the left periphery. We view the unavailability of multiple foci in such sentences a...
